a dog-eared town

I meant to mention the following Concord Monitor story when it came out but I forgot. It’s a neat story about a new business in the Concord area. I didn’t find a website for the company,but they really should have one.

Jimmy Lightholder used his comb to guide an antique hair razor through a customer’s thick white hair. Four cast-iron and porcelain barber chairs with worn red leather seats faced a row of tall mirrors. Hair tonics, pomades, creams and horsehair barber brushes lined the counter. In a back corner of the shop, a red- and blue-striped barber pole turned.

Stepping into Lucky’s Barber Shop and Shave Parlor on South State Street is like going back 70, 80, even 100 years. It’s an old-school barber shop, with the authenticity of places passed down through generations of barbers. For some old-time customers, it’s hard to believe Lucky’s was opened just three weeks ago by two 27-year-olds.

How cool is that?

I hope they’re able to stay in business and considering their work ethic, I have no doubt they will.

He and Lightholder wanted to start renovating the place as soon as they saw it - they had their tools in the bed of a truck outside. The landlord went back to his office and drew up the contract. The two started pulling up the carpet that night

It’s really nice to read a good story in the paper about people that really want to do something and they go out and do it. I may just have to drive up to Concord and get a trim.
