Why People Hate Lawyers
The Union Leader had this story about some scumbag drunk off his ass who ended up killing 2 people and there’s this truly stupid quote from the defense lawyer. Look, I know you’re doing your job and all, but it’s questions like the following that really just make lawyers look horrible.
Although his client was strapped to a backboard, with broken ankles and a ruptured spleen, after being extricated from the wreckage in which he was trapped by the crash, Monteith faulted the officer for not having Lamy perform the field sobriety tests often used to establish evidence of intoxication after a traffic stop.
The guy has two broken ankles and the lawyer is wondering why the police didn’t do a field sobriety test? Are you kidding me? Had the police done just that, I’m sure they would have been sued, and rightly so, for police brutality. But instead they took the guys blood and tested it for alcohol.
Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Jennifer Sandoval said testing by the state police laboratory showed Lamy’s blood alcohol content nearly 2 1/2 hours after the crash was .15, almost twice the legal limit of .08.
Another test about an hour and 10 minutes later showed a BAC of .12.
And that is why the lawyer is fighting to keep the tests out of court. The jury gets to see that and it’s over. Of course it’s the lawyers job to help keep scumbags out of jail but when they say tremendously stupid things like this in court, it only helps reinforce the do anything say anything mentality that makes most people think of lawyers as horrible people.
I just find it amazing that this lawyer having gone through college and passing the bar tests says something this idiotic. There was absolutely nothing else this lawyer could have said but why couldn’t be police do a field test on a guy with two broken ankles. Just amazing.

Lawyers, and their willingness to pull this kinda crap to make a buck, are one of the biggest problems we have in the legal system right now.

A defense attorney’s job is not to keep his client out of jail, but to ensure he receives a fair trial. If the client is not guilty, then a fair trial is necessary to ensure he stays out of jail.
