So you wanna be a rock and roll star?

Actually you don’t. What you want to be is a businessman who owns the rights to their own music and who can make money off of your music and not get bent over by the label. If you truly want to be successful in the music industry as a musician, watch this Dick Dale video. If you follow what he says and you can find your fans, you will be successful.
Mind you, his numbers are for today. When I was going to school for music, a new band would get a 300K advance and the label would put in about a million, but with inflation, it’s a bit different today. However, you still get the crappy royalties.
And as a side note, the royalties that are actually paid to musicians is the issue that makes me hate the industry. The RIAA goes on and on about piracy, but really, the musicians are already geting bent by the industry and literally are being paid 35 cents on a cd that sells for $15. Tell me that’s not stealing? And yet the RIAA goes on and on about piracy. The music industry is a disgrace and get everything that they deserve because all they care about is the labels getting money, NOT the artist.

Steve Vai is another good example, kept all his publishing rights and only pays for distribution. Also musicians need to pay attention to what they sign so that they don’t get screwed. Unfortunately most of them are young and idealistic and just see dollar signs. They need to remember they are dealing with lawers and accountants!
